Zane’s house was monstrous and breathtaking. The stone structure had ten bedrooms, twelve bathrooms, and was spread out across four stories. It was way too intimidating a place for me to stay, which is why I lived in the cottage in the woods behind his house.

Zane pulled to a stop in the circle drive, and we strode to the front door.

“Good afternoon,” Alfred said, opening the door before we even reached the house. “I have coffee and cake in the parlor.”

“Peanut butter cake?” I asked.

Alfred smiled. “Of course, Miss. I know it’s your favorite.”

“Is Rota in the parlor?” Zane asked as the three of us walked across the foyer.

“No, sir.” Alfred said. “She is in the studio working on her knife throwing.”

“But I’m in here.” Link, wings flapping rapidly, hovered over the peanut butter cake as he shoved a fistful into his mouth. “Mmmm…delicious.”

“Stop that right now,” Alfred scolded. “Your manners are atrocious, Mr. Link.”

Link grinned, and I saw bits of cake sticking to his teeth.

“I’ll tell Ms. Rota you will meet her in her office,” Alfred said stiffly, giving Link one more evil glare.

I cut two huge pieces of cake and carried them down the hallway to Rota’s office while Zane carried the coffee…Link trailing behind. I’d just taken a bite of the peanut butter cake when my grandmother strode inside the room, twirling a knife in each hand.

“I have a ton of information for you.” Rota let the knives fly through the air, and I let out a triumphant whoop when they embedded themselves side-by-side into the wall across the room.

“We just came from seeing Harvey,” I said. “Cause of death was not the blow to the head but drowning. He was also seriously inebriated.”

Rota grinned. “Harvey was seriously inebriated?”

I rolled my eyes. “Haha. No, Sloan was seriously inebriated.”

“So let’s get down to business.” Rota clicked a few keys on her computer, and a screen on the wall came to life. “I’ll give you the backgrounds, then you two can hash out your motives and alibis afterward. First on the list is Carl Klein, a werewolf. Married to Darcy Klein, a fairy. Both were recently employed by Supernatural Sport Resort. Carl has been arrested in the supernatural courts for both assault and battery and drunk and disorderly. The assault and battery was pleaded down, and he only served three months in jail. This was about thirteen years ago when Carl was still touring as a semi-pro tennis player. He beat another supernatural tennis player with a racket, and the other guy spent a few days in the hospital.”

“We’ve seen he has a temper,” I said.

“The drunk and disorderly was more recent,” Rota went on. “He and Sloan both were arrested the same night for the same incident about two years ago. Evidently, the two got into a fistfight with other locals at a local bar in their hometown, and then walked home. They were picked up on the side of the road and arrested. They both ended up doing community service.
